Dopo la morte del padre, Sal Paradise un aspirante scrittore newyorchese, incontra Dean Moriarty, giovane ex - pregiudicato dal fascino maledetto, sposato con la disinibita e seducente Marylou. Tra Sal e Dean l'intesa e' immediata e simbiotica. Decisi a non farsi rinchiudere in una vita vissuta secondo le regole, i due amici rompono tutti i legami e si mettono in viaggio con Marylou.
